The Story of the Bird of Paradise Flower

The Bird of Paradise flower, also known scientifically as Strelitzia reginae, is famed for its vibrant and exotic appearance. It is native to South Africa and named after Elizabeth of Bohemia, who was referred to as the "Bird of Paradise".

Queen Charlotte and the Naming of the Flower

Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818), the wife of King George III of the United Kingdom, was a passionate patron of botany and the natural sciences. During her reign, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew became a center for the collection of exotic plants from around the world, many of which were brought back by explorers and botanists.

Francis Masson, a Scottish botanist, and plant collector discovered the Bird of Paradise flower in South Africa and sent it to England. Out of admiration and respect for Queen Charlotte, botanists named the flower Strelitzia reginae—the genus "Strelitzia" coming from her family name, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and "reginae" meaning "of the queen" in Latin. This vibrant flower symbolizes beauty, joy, and magnificence, aligning perfectly with our brand's ethos.

Coincidentally, one of our founders, Alan Groseclose, hails from Charlotte, NC, named after the same Queen Charlotte. This connection symbolizes our commitment to beauty, resilience, and transcending ordinary experiences.
